Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Sports development plays a crucial role in the social and economic growth of communities, offering opportunities for youth empowerment, community engagement, and national pride. In Ankpa Local Government Area (LGA) of Kogi State, sports development has the potential to drive community cohesion and individual achievement. In recent years, social media platforms have become instrumental in promoting sports events, providing updates, and engaging with sports enthusiasts. This study aims to investigate the impact of social media on sports development in Ankpa LGA, focusing on how platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have contributed to the promotion of local sports, the involvement of youth, and the overall development of the sports sector in the region.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although Ankpa LGA has the potential for sports development, the community faces challenges such as limited resources, lack of visibility for local sports events, and minimal engagement from youth. While social media has the ability to address some of these challenges, there is limited research on its specific impact on sports development in this area. This study will assess the role of social media in promoting sports development, engaging local youth, and enhancing the visibility of sports events in Ankpa LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the role of social media in enhancing sports development at the grassroots level. The findings will inform policymakers, sports organizations, and community leaders in Ankpa LGA on how to leverage digital platforms for sports promotion and youth engagement.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the use of social media in promoting sports development in Ankpa LGA, Kogi State. It does not examine sports development efforts outside of this region or other forms of sports promotion.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
- Sports Development: Efforts aimed at improving sports infrastructure, participation, and overall performance within a community.
